Large Corporate Food Company Case Study
A large corporate food company had a requirement to centralise their Occupational Health provision. It was decided that technicians could carry out many of their regional Health Surveillance and Fitness to Work Medicals allowing Occupational Health staff to concentrate on specific Occupational Health related issues such as sickness absence management. With the seamless integration of a configured Occupational Health IT system, the company was able reduce its sickness absence levels resulting in significant cost savings and an increase in productivity allowing it to meet and exceed its KPI's (KBI's).
The initial focus was on configuring OPAS to assist with the Fitness to Work medicals. A questionnaire was incorporated within the system which enabled a user to specify which tasks the employee was to be assessed for. Common questions for the different tasks were amalgamated ensuring that they were asked only once and as the questionnaire was administrated, algorithms within it automatically assessed for each task whether the employee was fit or whether further advice should be sought.
Test data such as spirometry, blood pressure results etc. were also involved in the calculations. At the end of the medical a fitness report was generated which allowed the organisation to easily identify if the employee was fit for normal duties or if they required temporary or permanent work restrictions placed on them.
Ultimately all of this information was made available to managers via the corporate intranet, such that a manager could examine for a given employee which work activities that employee was suitable for and when the last Fitness to Work examination was carried out. The manager could also see whether the employee was on any current work restrictions. This enabled employees to be allocated to work tasks for which they were safely eligible for, and removed them from such tasks which may put them at further risk.
The whole process has allowed the organisation to more effectively target its Occupational Health function and enabled it to continue using the knowledge and skills of its workforce in some capacity when not 100% fit, without exposing the employees to further health risks. The result is that the organisation can now more effectively utilise its employee base and employees are in less danger of incurring health risks.
The system also managed the work restrictions enabling a full case management process and the OPAS restrictions form was modified by the OPAS developers and included in a software release as a general benefit to all customers for their use.
